Choosing the look

Most website tools hand you a colour wheel and a font list and quietly expect you to be a designer. Spanli asks you to pick what you like the look of instead.

You meet this while setting up the site, on the "Pick a look" step, and everything on it can be changed afterwards by asking.

Start with a Look

The first choice is a whole Look: one pick that moves the colours, the fonts, the corners and the spacing together into something that already goes together.

That is the shortcut past forty small decisions. If you do nothing else on this step, pick the Look you like best and move on.

Then turn one dial at a time

Beside the preview there is a short row of dropdowns. Change one and the site redraws immediately — the real page, not a swatch:

• Colour — the site's main colour.
• Fonts — shown as actual words in the actual lettering, because font names mean nothing to most people.
• Navigation — how the menu across the top sits.
• Hero — how the very top of the page opens.
• Corners — rounded or square.

Behind More options there are more, for anyone who wants them: Spacing, Background, Movement, light or dark pages, how strong the colour is, and the finer details of buttons, cards, headings, section breaks and depth.

Nothing here is permanent, and nothing is wrong. If it looks worse, you can see that it looks worse, and you change it back in a second.

What you choose by hand stays chosen

Pick a colour you love, then try three different Looks: everything else re-settles around each one, but your colour survives. Deliberate choices always beat the Look's suggestion.

Two escape hatches

"Paste a site you like" — if none of the Looks feel right, give Spanli the address of a site whose look you admire and it borrows the feel. Never its words and never its pictures; just the mood.

"Describe a colour in your own words" — if you cannot find your colour in the list, say it: "the green of a pine tree", "warm terracotta like the pots outside". It works out what you mean.

No opinion today?

"I feel lucky" hands the whole look to the AI. You still land on a finished site with every decision visible and changeable — you have not given anything away by using it.

Changing the look later

You are not locked in by anything you pick here. Once the site exists, ask in chat:

• "Make the whole thing warmer."
• "Less rounded."
• "Our brand colour is this exact green — use it throughout."
• "Try it with a dark background."

The dials are the fast way to start, not a one-time door.
